McClelland Heavyweight Champ

August 9, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

Mike McClelland wins Berkley Heavyweight TitleMike McClelland of Bella Vista, Ark., collected enough pounds and ounces of bass throughout the Bassmaster Elite Series season to win the 2008 Berkley Heavyweight Award. McClelland, who should finish in the top three in the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year race Sunday, received $20,000 for his Berkley Heavyweight effort at the season-ending Champion’s Choice presented by Ramada Worldwide on Oneida Lake out of Syracuse, N.Y.

Introduced in 2007 to the Bassmaster Elite Series, the Berkley Heavyweight Award is presented to the angler who catches the heaviest total weight of bass through the first two days of all 11 Elite Series events of the season.

McClelland’s final Berkley Heavyweight tally was 368 pounds, 9 ounces. That was nearly 16 pounds better than the weight posted by runner-up Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., the 2008 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year. VanDam, who won the inaugural Berkley Heavyweight Award in 2007, earned $10,000 for this year’s second-place effort.

“It’s cool to win this award,” said McClelland, who made the top-12 cut Saturday and will compete Sunday for the Champion’s Choice trophy and $100,000 first-place prize. “It’s a true test, bringing in the most weight while going up against a full field of competitors the first two days of competition at every event – more than 100 pros.”

Helping McClelland’s cause was his season-opening victory at the Sunshine Showdown on the Harris Chain of Lakes out of Leesburg, Fla. Through the first two days, McClelland had more than 30 pounds.

Finishing third in the Berkley Heavyweight standings was Todd Faircloth of Jasper, Texas, with 344 pounds, 0 ounces. He won $5,000.

2008 Berkley Heavyweight Award

1. Mike McClelland 368-9 $20,000

2. Kevin VanDam 352-10 $10,000

3. Todd Faircloth 344-0 $5,000

Wirth Reaches Deep on Day 1

June 27, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

Kevin Wirth, BASS professional anglerVeteran Bassmaster Elite Series pro Kevin Wirth of Crestwood, Ky., fished a depth at which he wasn’t exactly comfortable, and the change produced the best results he could have hoped for Thursday as he took the Day 1 lead at the Tennessee Triumph presented by Longhorn on Old Hickory Lake with a five-fish limit weighing 17 pounds, 2 ounces. Wirth is less than 1 pound ahead of Marty Stone of Fayettville, N.C., who weighed in 16 pounds, 5 ounces, and reigning Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., who is third with 15-9.

Fishing fans can catch all of the action on The Bassmasters on Saturday, July 5, at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN2. As always, live, streaming video of the daily weigh-ins and real-time leaderboards can be accessed on http://www.Bassmaster.com.

“I’m really happy with the way the day went. I just kind of kept pegging away,” said Wirth, who concentrated on three areas. “A real fortunate day, I like what I’m doing. I’ve never had to catch them at the depth that I’ve had to catch them at this week, the depth is really key.”

Wirth, 45, added that he’s fishing differently than he’s used to, and it is taking some adjustment.

“I’m not comfortable with it, but if I keep pegging away I might do all right. I don’t know how many I can catch a day, I might have caught all I can catch.”

With a victory, Wirth would earn $100,000, adding to his Purolator Big Bass honors and a $1,000 premium Thursday after his big fish weighed in at 6-4. While he was due to check in at 3:30 p.m., he caught the lunker at 2 p.m.

“I quit fishing as soon as I put him in the boat,” he said.

More than the trophy is at stake at the Tennessee Triumph, as the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year race is heating up dramatically. With just three events remaining, Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., leads Todd Faircloth of Jasper, Texas, and Reese, in third and fourth place, respectively, in the standings. The winner of the AOY will receive $250,000 and the points will also determine the brunt of the 2009 Bassmaster Classic qualifiers.

VanDam’s finish Thursday didn’t help his lead in the AOY race, as he weighed in 7-5 and finished 63rd on the day. Faircloth is tied for 22nd with 11-3.

Meanwhile, after moving around a lot to find the fish on ledges and ending up with a successful day, the 42-year-old Stone set a personal goal of finishing well at Old Hickory in order to make the 2009 Bassmaster Classic, set for Feb. 20-22 out of Shreveport-Bossier City, La.

“When you have days like that, you rack it up to being special,” said Stone, who has previously fished four Bassmaster Classics. “I need a good finish here. I need a good finish to get back in the Classic – I wanna get back to where I think I belong, and I belong in that Classic.”

Reese said he had two small fish by about 12:30 but was able to get some good bites in the last few hours of the day.

“I was not a happy camper for a long time today,” said Reese, who is fishing the outside and said he hasn’t been on the banks all week. “It just worked out in the end. I’ve noticed all week long that the afternoon bite was definitely way better. You catch 30-40 fish off a spot and no keepers, then one of the spots I went to later, I pull up and I catch a good one. There’s no rhyme or reason.”

Rounding out the top five: Dustin Wilks of Rocky Mount, N.C., with 15-4, and Kevin Langill of Terrell, N.C., with 15-3.

In the co-angler division, Steve Greene of Tennessee, leads the chase for the $25,000 top prize with 8 pounds, 14 ounces. Trailing Greene are Illinois’ Jason Luszcak, with 7-15, and Minnesota’s Ryan Piersdorf, with 7-14.

Daily tournament launches and weigh-ins will take place at Sanders Ferry Park in Hendersonville, 100 Sanders Ferry Park Rd. Launches begin at 6 a.m. CT and weigh-ins at 2 p.m.

Before Saturday’s weigh-in, activities for fans at the park include Bassmaster University’s “Ask the Experts,” a Berkley Beginner Fishing Class, Skeeter boat demo rides and the Purolator Big Bass Fan $1,000 Giveaway.

On Sunday, http://www.Bassmaster.com will provide updates throughout the day and preview the final weigh-in with Hooked Up, live at 2 p.m. CT, hosted by BASS emcee Keith Alan and ESPN2 Outdoors personalities Tommy Sanders and Mark Zona.

Kevin VanDam Claims 14th Win

June 16, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

Kevin VanDam with trophy after winning on Kentucky LakeFurthering his reputation as the best angler on the planet, three-time Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., scored his 14th BASS victory Sunday at the Bluegrass Brawl presented by DieHard® Platinum Marine Batteries on Kentucky Lake with a four-day total of 81 pounds, 13 ounces. VanDam held off by just 1 pound a hard-charging Tim Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala., who weighed in 24 pounds, 11 ounces Sunday to make things interesting.

In addition to the $100,000 victory, VanDam claimed the lead in the 2008 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings. With only three events remaining in the Trail to the Trophy, VanDam leads Todd Faircloth of Jasper, Texas, by 65 points, a modest margin. Mike McClelland of Bella Vista, Ark., is third and reigning AOY Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., is fourth. The eventual winner will take home $250,000, and the standings will also determine the brunt of the 2009 Bassmaster Classic qualifiers.

After narrowly missing out on an Elite victory by 8 ounces last week to Jeremy Starks of Charleston, W.Va., on Alabama’s Wheeler Lake — part of the Tennessee River chain along with Kentucky Lake – VanDam was able to exact some redemption on the Elite field. At Wheeler, he absorbed trash talk from Starks and relinquished the lead on the final day. But, on Kentucky Lake, VanDam led wire-to-wire and pushed his career BASS earnings to nearly $3 million.

“This win means more to me than any that I have experienced in a long while,” VanDam, 40, said of the Father’s Day victory. “Two years ago, I finished third in this tournament, and this year I was smart about it. I planned for the boat traffic and made sound decisions.”

Fishing fans can catch all of the action on The Bassmasters on Saturday, June 21, at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN2. As always, live, streaming video of the final day weigh-in and real-time leaderboards was available on http://www.Bassmaster.com.

Plagued by boat traffic from competitors in other tournaments, VanDam was able to catch more than 20 pounds each of the first three days of competition. Surprisingly, he struggled Sunday, the one day the boat traffic decreased. But VanDam had saved for late in the day a final spot that he identified during practice, and he was able to upgrade his weight in the final hours of competition. The victory is his fourth in Elite Series competition, the most of any angler since the format was created in 2006.

Throughout the tournament, VanDam mixed it up with a variety of lures. His most productive, like last week on Wheeler, was a Strike King series 6 in sexy shad color. He said he used jigs, spinnerbaits and other crankbaits throughout the four-day competition. The key to victory, he said, was keying on rough spots on shell beds in the bottom of the lake. VanDam felt the fish were bunched around these spots and found most of his productive schools at these locations.

Now, after his fourth consecutive top-12 cut, VanDam’s focus turns to the all-important Angler of the Year race.

“That is the ultimate goal,” said the two-time Bassmaster Classic champion. “Amongst the anglers, that’s what we talk about. It’s just an honor to be in the hunt.”

Timmy Horton with big largemouth bassHorton, who totaled 83 pounds, 12 ounces through four days, nearly made an amazing comeback. He trailed VanDam by almost 7 pounds heading into the final day, and though he was satisfied with his catch Sunday, he lamented a few lost fish that he felt would have won the event for him.

He threw a crankbait like most in the field, but the key to Horton’s success was shaving the edges to allow the bait to swim through the water with greater ease.

“This one is a little bit easier to swallow because I came in thinking I was fishing for second place,” said Horton, the 2000 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year. “You just don’t expect Kevin to slip. But it was a great tournament.”

In third was Terry Butcher of Talala, Okla., who moved up from sixth with 78 pounds, 3 ounces. McClelland moved up from seventh to fourth with 77 pounds, 1 ounce. Rounding out the top five was Paul Elias of Laurel, Miss., with 75 pounds, 14 ounces.

Elite rookie Wade Grooms of Bonneau, S.C, finished seventh and four-time Bassmaster Classic champion Rick Clunn, second heading into the day, slipped to ninth.

In addition to the Angler of the Year race, the Advance Auto Parts Rookie of the Year race will be settled based on Elite Series performance. Elite rookie Bobby Lane of Lakeland, Fla., has opened up a commanding margin of 257 points over Grooms. With only three events remaining, Lane will need to falter to relinquish his sizable lead.

Next, the Bassmaster Elite Series circuit heads to Old Hickory Lake out of Hendersonville, Tenn. The ninth event of the season, recently rescheduled from the Mississippi River because of unsafe conditions in Fort Madison, Iowa, is set for June 26-29.

Straddling the Kentucky-Tennessee border, Kentucky Lake is 185 miles in length, with 160,000 surface acres and 2,380 miles of shoreline. Barkley, a navigable canal, adds another 80,000 surface acres. The Bassmaster Elite Series made its last stop at Kentucky Lake in June 2006, when the top seven pros each caught more than 60 pounds through four days. Winner Morizo Shimizu weighed in 66 pounds, 9 ounces.

VanDam Leads Bluegrass Brawl

June 13, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

Kevin VanDam Leads on Kentucky Lake, Bassmaster Elite Bluegrass BrawlAfter barely missing out on his 13th BASS win at Alabama’s Wheeler Lake last weekend, three-time Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Kevin VanDam is back in the saddle again, leading the Bluegrass Brawl presented by DieHard Platinum Marine Batteries® with a Thursday catch of 24 pounds, 13 ounces.

VanDam’s nearest competitor was Mike McClelland of Bella Vista, Ark., who weighed 23 pounds, 6 ounces. Perhaps the best angler in the history of bass fishing, VanDam continued his assault on the Tennessee River chain. He finished second at Wheeler last week, finishing behind first-time BASS winner Jeremy Starks of Charleston, W.Va., by just 8 ounces, and again used a similar pattern to propel himself into the early lead of the four-day tournament.

More important, VanDam moved up significantly in the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year race. If his position holds, he will be in good shape with only three events remaining to score his fourth AOY title. Texan Todd Faircloth, who led VanDam by just 18 points heading into the Kentucky Lake event, was 39th and Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., who was in third in the season-long points race, was tied for 10th. McClelland, who was in fourth in the AOY standings, could also gain significant ground. The winner of the AOY will receive $250,000 and the points will also determine the brunt of the 2009 Bassmaster Classic qualifiers.

With a victory, VanDam, 39, would earn $100,000, pushing his BASS career earnings mark to nearly $3 million. Also a two-time Bassmaster Classic winner, VanDam is seeking his fourth victory in Elite Series competition, which would be the most for any angler since the inception of the groundbreaking circuit.

Fishing fans can catch all of the action on The Bassmasters on Saturday, June 21 at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN2. As always, live, streaming video of the daily weigh-ins and real-time leaderboards can be accessed on http://www.Bassmaster.com.

In third was Byron Velvick of Del Rio, Texas, with 21 pounds, 15 ounces. Trailing Velvick were Timmy Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala., in fourth with 21 pounds, 1 ounce and Bradley Hallman of Norman, Okla., in fifth with 20 pounds, 12 ounces. BASS four-day heavyweight record holder Paul Elias of Laurel, Miss., was sixth with 20 pounds, 4 ounces.

“I’m still not happy about last week,” said VanDam. “That’s the way fishing goes though. You can bet I’m going to get my share and I feel like I’m dialed in right now.”

His 24-13 limit included a six-pound, seven-ounce lunker, good enough for Purolator Big Bass honors and a $1,000 premium. Like last week on Wheeler, VanDam used a variety of lures to entice the biggest bass. He was executing his typical run-and-gun style, spending little time on locations before moving to the next.

His most productive lure, like Wheeler, was a Strike King sexy shad. He was bothered by boat pressure from anglers not in the tournament but felt he could fight through it as the tournament progressed.

“Kentucky Lake is absolutely on fire right now,” VanDam said of the spacious fishery. “We have hit it at the perfect time. This is going to be a very exciting tournament.”

McClelland has located three schools of fish that he is targeting throughout the day. Thursday, he was able to expand on his primary area and made a subtle bait change which he believed led to bigger bites.

He estimated he caught 30 fish that weighed more than 3 pounds and feels that local boat pressure could be a problem as the tournament unfolds.

“My practice was just insane,” said McClelland, 40. “I located some great areas that were away from the crowds. I’m hoping these spots can hold up.”

Elias, who was sixth, made a costly mistake, bringing six fish to the weigh-in. His penalty, losing his largest fish, estimated at more than 6 pounds, and a 1-pound subtraction, significantly impacted his weight. Still, he feels he is on the fish to win his second Elite event of 2008.

2006 Kentucky Lake Elite champion Morizo Shimizu of Japan struggled to an 83rd-place finish. Other notables include Kevin Wirth of Crestwood, Ky. (15th) and Canadian Jon Bondy (18th). Only the top 50 anglers will fish Saturday with the top 12 advance to Sunday, the final day of competition.

Meanwhile, Tommy Biffle of Wagoner, Okla., had his Thursday catch disqualified for violation of rule 6.iii, stating “all competitors are bound by the prevailing statutes and regulations of the various states within which they fish”. Biffle was cited for fishing in Tennessee waters without a valid license.

In the co-angler division, Matt Hoffman of Highland Heights, Ky., leads the chase for the $25,000 top prize with 18 pounds, 14 ounces. Trailing Hoffman were Missouri’s Dave Dickherber in second with 16 pounds, 8 ounces and Indiana’s Jason Seaton with 16 pounds, 2 ounces. The co-angler competition ends Saturday.

Straddling the Kentucky-Tennessee border, Kentucky Lake is 185 miles in length, with 160,000 surface acres and 2,380 miles of shoreline. Barkley, a navigable canal, adds another 80,000 surface acres. The Bassmaster Elite Series made its last stop at Kentucky Lake in June 2006, when the top seven pros caught more than 60 pounds through four days. Winner Morizo Shimizu of Japan weighed in 66 pounds, 9 ounces.

Daily weigh-ins and launches at the Bluegrass Brawl will take place at Kentucky Dam Marina, 1300 Administration Drive. Launches Thursday-Sunday begin at 8 a.m. CT and weigh-ins begin at 5 p.m.

Activities at the Bluegrass Brawl include a musical performance Saturday and Sunday afternoon by country artists Nashville Songwriters. There will be a Berkley Beginner fishing class at 3:30 p.m. and a “Boat Performance with Skeeter” class daily at 4 p.m. both days, as well as Skeeter boat demo rides from noon to 2 p.m.

On Saturday, fans can talk to the Elite pros during “Ask the Experts” at Bassmaster University, set for 4:30 p.m. at the weigh-in site.

Sunday’s activities include the live taping at 4:30 p.m. CT of Hooked Up, hosted by BASS emcee Keith Alan, ESPN Outdoors personalities Tommy Sanders and Mark Zona. The show, which airs on Bassmaster.com, will preview the final weigh-in. Live, streaming video of the daily weigh-ins begins at 5 p.m. ET on Bassmaster.com.
